Cancer, without doubt, is a much feared and potentially debilitating disease. Often, cancer sufferers, especially those who undergo conventional cancer treatment, are, sadly, scarred for life.

And a recent study conducted by researchers from the Coronel Institute of Occupational Health, Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam has revealed that survivors of the disease experience more difficulty finding or staying in jobs, as compared to those who have never had the ailment.

The study team had looked at 36 studies previously conducted in various countries, including Europe and the United States. All in all, almost 178,000 people were covered, with over 20,000 having had cancer.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that cancer survivors had 1.4 times the likelihood of being unemployed, as compared to those who never had the disease. The linked seemed stronger for certain cancers, namely breast, gastrointestinal and those of the female reproductive system.

Besides the negative impact of conventional cancer treatment, other factors which caused the abovementioned association include discrimination, physical or mental impairments arising from cancer and cancer treatment, as well as finding it hard to juggle treatment with a full-time job.
