Surgeon General’s Report Suggests Smoking Harms Health Even More Than Most Realize

The detrimental effects of smoking on health are usually associated with lung cancer and other respiratory ailments.

However, the Surgeon General’s Health Consequence of Smoking: 50 Years of Progress report tells us that the adverse impact of smoking on health is even greater than previously believed.

Some snippets of information from the report include:

* 1 in every 3 cancer deaths is caused by smoking

* since the first report was published, over 20 million Americans have died from smoking; this staggering figure includes 2.5 million who were non-smokers suffering from exposure to secondhand smoke, as well as 100,000 babies

* if present-day smoking trends continue, some 5.6 million youths alive today will die prematurely due to smoking-related ailments

The contribution of smoking to various chronic diseases among the population at large today, even though widely known, could in fact still be understated. We talk about diet, nutrition, exercise and various treatments – perhaps more effort and resources should be pumped into getting more people to kick this disastrous health habit.
